Confession: I Like Fictional People More Than Real Ones

I probably shouldn’t admit this… but I like fictional people more than real ones most days.
There’s just something about them. They’re intense, complicated, a little broken in all the right ways—and somehow, they make more sense than reality ever does. They feel everything deeply, say the things most people won’t, and live in a world where emotions actually matter.
And maybe that says more about me than I’d like to admit.
I’ve always been drawn to stories that don’t feel easy. The kind that pull you in, wreck you a little, and then leave you sitting there wondering why you’re so attached to people who don’t even exist. But honestly? I don’t think they’re not real. I think they’re just… understood differently.
Because when I’m reading—or writing—I’m not just watching a story unfold. I’m in it. I feel it. I live it right alongside them. And those moments? They stick with me in a way real-life conversations sometimes don’t.
Maybe it’s because fictional characters don’t pretend. They don’t filter themselves the way we do. They’re messy and emotional and sometimes completely unhinged—and somehow, that makes them easier to connect with.
Or maybe it’s just that I’ve spent so much time in their world, it started to feel like home.
Either way, if you’ve ever found yourself more invested in a character’s life than your own to-do list… just know you’re not alone.
And if you haven’t yet—don’t worry.
Give me time. I’ll introduce you to a few you won’t forget.
